Published by ZKP RTV Slovenija in cooperation with Radio Slovenia – Program Ars, the audiobook of Ivan Cankar’s short symbolist novel Na klancu (On the Hill) is now available. The work, which is also part of this year’s matura reading list, was described by the author as his first major success with the wider public and as one of his most distinctive creations. The novel, which in many ways reflects the story of Cankar’s mother and her family, was artistically transformed by the writer into a symbolic pursuit of the cart of humanity, marked by the suffering of the poor and their longing for happiness. “Francka, humiliated and mocked, resigned yet strong and resilient, carries on her back not only the three but all four corners of the humble hut on the hill of the poor—and perhaps even a few more. Life slips away from her, she runs after it with all her might, ‘but the cart went on and disappeared into the forest.’ Alongside Francka, other members of her family—her husband and children—come to life in the short novel, trapped in their social environment. ‘One after another they left, each cutting a piece from her heart; and they returned sick and poor, lay down, and died,’” wrote literary editor Vlado Motnikar about the work. The audiobook is interpreted by actor Matej Puc, directed by Klemen Markovčič, with sound engineers Urban Gruden and Sonja Strenar. The recording will also be broadcast in December on Program Ars in the show Odprta knjiga (The Open Book).

Ivan Cankar
Ivan Cankar (1876–1918)—poet, novelist, playwright, and essayist—was a perceptive observer and sharp chronicler of Slovenian society, often emphasizing moral and ethical principles in his works. He wrote about the ordinary person in their subservient position toward all kinds of authorities, portraying both their struggle for survival and their persistence in upholding their values. The novel Na klancu, which contains many motifs drawn from Cankar’s own family, belongs among his earlier works and was first published in 1903.
