This year the SVEA Zagorje wind orchestra celebrates its 150th anniversary. For the past 30 years, the orchestra has been well known in Slovenia and across the globe, as it has presented itself to listeners in various concerts and events with pleasing and quality performances of various music kinds.
The SVEA Zagorje orchestra has participated in numerous competitions, amongst them is the 1981 world championships in Kerkrade, Netherlands, where it won the gold medal and a competition in German Bamberg in 1992, where it achieved overall first place. Lastly, it participated at the 13th International competition of large wind orchestras in Ostrava, Czech Republic, in 2007, where it won the golden award for the highest category of difficulty and where the conductor Peter Kuder received an
award for the best conductor of that competition.
During its operation, the orchestra has made many guest appearances, namely in the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Italy, Austria, former Yugoslavian republics, Norway and Spain. If we expose more important guest appearances, in 1996, on the occasion of raising the Slovenian Christmas tree, the orchestra was invited to the Vatican, where the bandsmen were hosted by Pope Jean Paul II himself at his palace. The following September of the next year, the orchestra represented Slovenia in Russia
at the 850th anniversary of Moscow, where it had as many as 8 performances before a mass audience. In 2000, a guest appearance in the polish city of Wieliczka followed, where the orchestra appeared in a concert 125 m underground in a salt mine at the 1st underground festival of mining wind orchestras.
Nevertheless, the musicians prefer to perform in front of a domestic crowd. Each year, the orchestra prepares two individual concerts and participates in numerous events. The better known ones include Lent Festival, Ljubljana Festival, Rock Otocec, Festival of Beer and flowers, etc. On many occasions, it has also appeared in Ljubljana, among other occasions, at the independence of the Republic of Slovenia, on June 25th 1991.
The orchestra has recorded many records, amongst which, the final ones are also the most successful, containing hits from film and popular music. In 1998, the orchestra received a Zlati petelin (Golden rooster) award for the CD “Film, Blues, Pop-Rock”, in the category for the best performer of film, scene and instrumental music. At its 140th anniversary, the orchestra released a CD of famous pop/rock remakes, and in 2006, a CD which contains a selection of Slovenian compositions of different
genres.
Here is a CD carrying a selection of songs recorded and released in the past. The package also features a DVD with four professional videos and a programme with popular Slovenian songs, which was recorded for the national television.
