Ensemble MD (Musica Danubiana) gave its first performance November 7, 2001 in Vienna under the direction of Marko Munih. Later it was renamed and restructured into its current unusual arrangement: flute (Matej Zupan), clarinet (Jože Kotar), trombone (Miha Šular), percussion (Franci Krevh), piano (Luca Ferrini), viola (Katja Krajnik) and cello (Igor Mitrović). Originally the MD7 ensemble, which operates under the aegis of the MD7 Society for Contemporary Music,
performed without a conductor. Later the group was led by Andreja Šolar. In 2005 the ensemble was joined by Steven Loy, who has remained their regular conductor. Pavel Mihelčič has been the ensemble’s artistic director since its inception.
Already with the first concert in its new formation (which took place November 20, 2002), the MD7 ensemble realised its main objective: to perform primarily works which respect the instrumentation of the ensemble and which are practically written for it. A number of Slovenian and non-Slovenian composers have written new works for MD7 since then. Among those from Slovenia are Ivo Petrić, David Beovič, Črt Sojar Voglar, Pavel Mihelčič, Jani Golob, Dušan Bavdek, Bojana Šaljić Podešva, Marko
Mihevc, Ne- nad Firšt, Peter Šavli, Nina Šenk, Urška Orešič, Bojan Glavina, Tomaž Habe, Vito Žuraj, Urška Pompe, Corrado Rojac, Tina Mauko and Lojze Lebič. Among the non-Slovenian composers who have accepted invitations to write for the ensemble are Stefano Bonetti (Italy), François Bousch (France), Giampaolo Coral (Italy), Sorin Lerescu (Romania), Jean-Luc Darbelley (Switzerland), Andrian Pertout (Australia), Martin Marek (Czech Republic), Lars Graugaard (Denmark), Harry Crowl (Brazil). Wing
Wah Chan (Hong Kong), Dmitri Lybin (Belorus), David McMullin (USA), Zygmunt Krauze (Poland), Sukhi Kang (S. Korea), Karmella Tsepkolenko (Ukraine) and others. To date the ensemble’s repertoire comprises more than 50 original works — nearly 70 if we include the works to be premiered in 2010. In addition there are a number of works in the group’s repertoire that have lasting value. Commissioned works written especially for the ensemble will continue to remain the bulk of the ensemble’s
repertoire in the future.
