REMEMBERING PAVEL ŠIVIC
I knew Prof. Pavel Šivic when I was the editor of the magazine “Naši zbori” (Our Choirs). He frequently dropped by at our editorial office and later I often visited him at his home. Each encounter was a unique and interesting experience. In his thoughts ideas were churning continuously, memories were coming to life. When meeting someone by chance, he simply continued to talk about whatever he was thinking about at that moment. In these conversations he was sometimes severely critical of the situation of music and composers in the Slovene society at the time, at others he shared memoires from rich and varied life experience and told of his encounters with distinguished European personalities of the first half of the 20th century. I always listened to him with a mixture of curiosity and reverence. He was an exceptional narrator.
Gentlemen of such stature, whom we so deeply esteemed, are no longer with us! Alongside those it is Pavel Šivic who completes their number.

BRIEF ETERNITY
The first century and one year of Eternity has passed, since the year when Pavel Šivic had been born. The Brevity, and at the same time the Eternity of his music is encapsulated within the scores and the recordings. There are few composers so directly connected to the world of broadcasting. During the 2nd World War radio listeners could enjoy Pavel Šivic playing the piano for them – live; before and after the war, when closely associated with the Slovenian Teachers’ Choir “Emil Adamič” and the Partisans’ Disabled Soldiers’ Choir, the radio waves echoed with his interpretations, essays and commentaries. And – last but not least – the radio music archives are conserving the recordings of his works from which the very best were chosen for the present musical box, arranged in a mosaic of different performers and venues. It goes without saying that each work can conceal hundreds and thousands of stories.
This string of musical pearl provides a glimpse into the composer’s innermost self and into the recent history in our part of the world, yet at the same time it also carries a legacy for tomorrow and – for the Brief Eternity.
