ZKP RTV Slovenia in cooperation with Radio Slovenia - ARS programme is releasing Brahms Piano Variations on themes by Schumann, Händel and Paganini performed by pianist Danijel Brecelj. "Brahms expresses himself distinctively and comprehensively in his variations. Each musical theme by another composer is approached in a unique way, giving each set of variations its own character. The variations on Schumann’s theme are expressive, they are revealing pain, Handel’s variations have a very clear formal and harmonic structure, and include a fugue which is one of the main compositional forms from the Baroque period, while the Paganini variations are characterised above all by instrumental virtuosity, but without overlooking the poetic expression, especially of the slower variations. I appreciate the Brahms’s feeling for creating full harmonies with Romantic rapture within a meaningful formal structure. This allows the performer profound personal expression, which, along with virtuosity and symphonic sonority, completes the musical narrative in a thoughtful and effective way. Danijel Brecelj

Danijel Brecelj (1988) has been awarded prizes at several international competitions, such as the Mayenne International Piano Competition in 2012 (2nd prize) and the Yamaha Foundation Competition in France in 2011, he was also a finalist at the Guido Alberto Fano International Piano Competition in 2012. He is often invited to appear at a range of festivals, and he performs regularly with several orchestras, including the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra and the Mitteleuropa Orchestra of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. He is also active as a composer, he performed his own Piano Concerto at the age of sixteen. In 2021, he established the Festival de piano de Dijon. He often records for Slovenian national radio.

After studying piano at the Ljubljana Conservatory of Music with Prof. Siavush Gadjiev, Danijel Brecelj went on to obtain a diploma and a master’s degree with Prof. Roger Muraro at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris. He then furthered his studies with Prof. Rolf Plagge at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, where he graduated with a concert master degree in 2016. He subsequently took part in masterclasses and received advice from a number of notable pianists, including J. Rouvier, P. L. Aimard, N. Goerner and H. K. Kammerling. He also studied composition at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris with Prof. Yves Henry and obtained a diploma in harmony.
