At ZKP RTV Slovenia, in collaboration with Radio Slovenia – Program Ars, we are releasing a digital album Koncert za klavir in orkester št. 2 (Piano Concerto No. 2,) performed by the composer and pianist Žiga Stanič, accompanied by the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Davorin Mori. Piano Concerto No. 2 is conceived as a single-movement work. It is characterized by a pronounced use of extended piano techniques and prepared piano, as well as the preparation of various orchestral instruments and the inclusion of an electroacoustic layer. The central thread of the performance concept highlights the piano as a percussion instrument, closely connected with the orchestral percussion section. As in many of his works, Stanič employs orchestral onomatopoeia, aleatoric procedures, and an anti-dramatic tension that oscillates between the absurd and the tragic. The treatment of indeterminate tonal lines, shaped through static and dynamic sound layers, creates in the listener a sense of virtuosity and psychoacoustic elusiveness. The central idea of the concerto reflects the omnipresence of mechanical automation and the expansion of artificial intelligence in contemporary life, manifested in the interplay between mechanically generated piano sound and electroacoustic elements. As in most of his oeuvre, Stanič here also strives for a polystylistic distance from established aesthetic norms, or toward a polymorphic compositional structure that most authentically reflects the time in which we live—a time of informational saturation in which the individual searches for identity and ultimately identifies with it precisely through this flow.

Žiga Stanič

Pianist and composer Žiga Stanič holds a doctorate in composition and is a recipient of the Prešeren Student Award. Since 2002, he has also served as a producer of the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra. He understands music primarily as a means of directly addressing the listener. His creative work is based on exploring the psychological effect of sound—from examining the relationship between consonance and dissonance to exploiting the unusual timbral possibilities of the prepared piano.
