MLADI JAZZ - YOUNG JAZZ - KREČIČ, PUKL, SMOLEj, TETIČKOVIČ
Following studies in classical guitar, Klemen Smolej went on to study jazz guitar in Klagenfurt, continuing his training at numerous masterclasses. He was awarded the audience First Prize at the Jazzon competition in 2007 and in 2011 won First Prize for best Slovenian jazz composition. In 2013 he released his debut album Nice Twice, featuring a jazz sextet playing original compositions. In addition to playing in various ensembles, he teaches jazz guitar at the Ljubljana
Conservatory and classical guitar at the music primary school in Tržič.
“I am honored to collaborate with the RTV Slovenia Big Band, an ensemble I’ve loved since I was a teenager and who accepted my compositions as their own.”
Offered a scholarship to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York following a workshop with the legendary Reggie Workman, percussionist Žan Tetičkovič has twice been awarded (2012 and 2014) the prestigious ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award for composition. In the 50-year history of the prize this has been achieved by only five Americans. He also was awarded the Downbeat magazine prize in 2014 in the “Outstanding Performance
– Small Group” category for his debut album Balchemy with the eponymous New York ensemble, and the Jazzon Prize in Slovenia. He plays and composes with the best American and Slovenian jazz musicians.
“The Oasis Project, which we first presented with the RTV Slovenia Big Band in 2014 at the Cerkno Jazz Festival, was an indescribable and extraordinary experience for me. To work together with such an experienced and polished jazz ensemble was for me – a drummer and very young composer – a great honor and definitely something I will never forget.”
Saxophonist Jure Pukl, one of the most successful Slovenian jazz musicians active in the US and in Europe, studied classical saxophone in Vienna and jazz saxophone in The Hague, continuing on a scholarship at Berklee College of Music. He also studied with well-known musicians such as Joe Lovano and George Garzone. "...Pukl combines the skill, soul, and appetite for adventure that has fuelled jazz evolution from the beginning, and he’s a rising star
of a creative new generation that is energetically driving the music on into its second century," wrote The Guardian reviewing his album Abstract Society. In 2015 he was awarded the Prešeren Fund Prize.
“It was a great pleasure to work with the RTV Slovenia Big Band. I was especially impressed with the professionalism and enthusiasm they showed during my project. The excellent concert performance was the result of high-quality organization and the positive atmosphere throughout the entire production process. Thank you all!”
Saxophonist and physicist Lenart Krečič graduated from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and earned a masters degree at New York University. He has studied and performed with world-renowned musicians such as J. Purcell, B. Harper, R. Workman and others. Since returning to Europe in 2011 following the release of his debut Chain of Sounds, he has recorded numerous albums, composed for a broad range of ensembles and written music for two
documentary films. In 2015 he was the composer, soloist and conductor of the project “RTV Slovenia Big Band and Guests Gene Lake and Boris Kozlov”, and later became the ensemble’s artistic coordinator.
“I have wanted to do a project with the RTV Slovenia Big Band for many years and in 2015 that wish finally came true. This was an unforgettable and extraordinary experience with such a high quality ensemble and guests, as well as inspiration for the future! Thank you all and I hope we meet again soon!”
