ZKP RTV Slovenija, in collaboration with Radio Slovenia – First Programme (Prvi) and RTV Slovenija Music Production, is releasing the track Alfonso the Spanish Fly, performed by Zookeepers and the RTV Slovenia Big Band, led by arranger and conductor Aleš Avbelj.

The RTV Slovenia Big Band welcomed Zookeepers as guests at a concert at SiTi Teater in Ljubljana on 31 January 2025, and the live recording of Alfonso the Spanish Fly is the first in a series of releases leading up to the forthcoming album. The project – or rather, the band – Zookeepers is the brainchild of composer and guitarist Gašper Kržmanc. Like a zookeeper, Gašper moves among different animal species that have inspired his compositions through personal experiences, close encounters, or simply observation. The music is not confined to a single genre, flowing freely between jazz, funk, blues, and rock. The outstanding arrangements for jazz orchestra are by composer and conductor Aleš Avbelj.

The track Alfonso the Spanish Fly is exactly what its title suggests. The buzzing fly can not only be heard in the music – if you close your eyes, you can almost see it. Gašper unknowingly brought the fly home in his suitcase after a trip to Spain. Once released, it flew to freedom, and its distinctly Spanish buzzing became the inspiration for the composition.

Zookeepers is made up of members of the Slovenian Armed Forces Orchestra and is led by guitarist Gašper Kržmanc. The other members are pianist Aleš Ogrin, bassist Klemen Krajc, and drummer Miha Recelj.
